Program Overview

The "Purple Diamonds Enrichment and Performing Arts Program" project is designed to promote education and equity among girls from low socio-economic backgrounds in Jackson, Mississippi, and nearby regions.

This comprehensive initiative offers cost-free dance classes in a variety of styles, including Hip Hop, Contemporary, Ballet, Jazz, African, Latin, and Majorette, enriched by educational workshops and mentorship programs. Catering to girls aged 4-18, the program not only imparts dance as an expressive art form but also nurtures essential qualities such as confidence, leadership, and teamwork.

A key focus of the program is to encourage and support participants in pursuing and successfully obtaining college degrees, preferably from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). By merging dance with academic guidance and support, this initiative aims to empower these young women, equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge for success in both their educational pursuits and broader life experiences.

Project's Components

The "Purple Diamond Enrichment and Performing Arts Program," under the skilled leadership of Executive Director Shanika Kelly Lee, includes a pivotal goal of encouraging participants to pursue higher education, particularly at HBCUs renowned for their dance teams and nationwide performance opportunities. This goal is woven into the fabric of the project's curriculum and mentorship programs.

  1. Educational Workshops: In addition to dance training, the project will offer workshops focusing on college preparation, application processes, and the unique opportunities available at HBCUs.

  2. Mentorship from HBCU Alumni: Collaborating with HBCU alumni, particularly those who have been part of renowned dance teams, to mentor the girls, providing them with insights and guidance on the college experience, especially in the context of joining dance teams.

  3. College Visits and Interaction with HBCU Dance Teams: Organizing visits to local HBCUs, allowing participants to interact with college dance teams and experience the campus atmosphere firsthand.

  4. Performance Opportunities: Showcasing the talents of these young dancers in events and platforms where they can be noticed by college scouts, especially from HBCUs.

  5. Scholarship Information and Guidance: Providing information and guidance on scholarships and financial aid, particularly those offered by HBCUs for dancers and performing artists.

By emphasizing the significance of higher education and the rich opportunities available at HBCUs, the "Dance Empowerment for Future Leaders" project not only aims to develop the dance skills of young women but also to open pathways for their academic and career advancements. This holistic approach ensures the participants are well-prepared for their future educational and professional endeavors, particularly in the vibrant cultural settings of HBCUs.
